1. Structurally speaking, the framework is the most important thing to examine. Get down on the ground and check underneath. Don’t worry if you see some superficial rust…steel frames are going to have some. Just be sure the steel doesn’t “give”.

2. The trailer floor is also vital. If a trailer is not cleaned after being used, the manure and urine will erode the flooring. Be sure you pull the mats out and look underneath them for areas of weakness.

3. Next look at the fiberglass coating. Look for cracks, holes and splits in the sidewalls. If rain has gotten into these areas, the sidewalls could be weakened. Also check the interior walls. If they are streaked or stained there is a leak that needs fixing!

4. Inspect the roof. If it is made of fiberglass you want to inspect to see if the gel coat has been worn away. Is it stringy looking? Or fuzzy? Does it appear to be thinner in some areas. If the roof is pieced, look at the condition of the seams.

5. Check the trailer suspension. Be sure you look for corrosion, as with any other metal part of the trailer. This is really important because a faulty hanger could cause the axle to come out from under the trailer.

6. The brakes will likely be either a 2 or 4 wheel electric system. Be sure the brakes are working electronically. Is power from the vehicle getting to the trailer and engaging the brakes? Test drive it.

7. The coupler should be in good condition. This is the part that attaches the trailer to the truck. Hook to it a few times to be sure it works well. The dolly wheel should be straight and easy to crank.

8. Trailer ramps vary in style and structure. Older models simply have doors and the horse must step up into the trailer. Most have ramps that fold down. Whichever you are looking at, be sure the hinges and latches work freely and easily.

9. Imagine yourself using the trailer. Will your horse be comfortable and safe? Is the ventilation sufficient? Do the escape doors work properly and sized adequately for you to maneuver? Can you get to all the horses in case of an emergency?

10. Finally, be sure the trailer has a valid title and the VIN matches the title! Get a bill of sale!
