We have a horse we brought back from auction in a livestock trailer and he came off pretty easily with some hesitation. I was just wondering the best way to train a horse to get into a smaller 2 stall horse trailer and back off with out raring up. Thanks
Keep calm, Let them check it out . Move the seperating bar to the side once they see they CAN fit they may go closer. If they step onto the ramp that ia an acheivement and always stroke them and keep them calm. Walk beside them ( at the shoulder) towards the float and start to walk up. he/ she may walk a little bit. let them sus it out. Eventually go infront and lead them on keep stroking them.
Hope this helps let me know how you go
can you email me on amy2454@bigpond.net.au Send pic lol

How do you train a horse to get in and out of a trailer safely and calmly? With the renowned trailer-training method taught by the late Dr. Edwin Goodwin, long-time equine professor at the University of Maryland, its simple. In Trailer-Training Your Horse, journalist and equine enthusiast Laura Harrison McBride brings to publication for the first time the lessons and advice of Dr. Goodwin. The step-by-step training technique works quickly on green horses; it works fairly quickly on older horses that have always been led; and it works a bit more slowly on horses that have had negative trailering experiences. Most important, it works, almost without fail, and it can help your horse overcome fear, stubbornness, bad training, and bad handling. To accompany the training, youll learn how to choose the right trailer, as well as how to prepare your horse for the trip and what supplies you need to make the trip as comfortable and stress-free as possible. by Laura Harrison McBride 32 pages; 5 1/2" x 8 1/2"; Paperback.

I am looking for a 4X4 to tow a double horse trailer with two 15.2 hh horses. The vechicle needs to be powerful enough to tow up steep hills (live in wales!) and i know certain makes are awful for towing. Any ideas or advice apreciated
All the wise old horse people I know say a diesel engine is the best for hilly areas - more torque than a gas engine. Plus you get the benefit of better fuel economy and longer engine life (if you take care of it).
For size I would go at least 3/4 ton and 8 cylinder engine. I live in a flat area, drive 3/4 ton gas Ford F250 5.4L, and pull 3600# aluminum 2H slant gooseneck trailer, and it pulls and stops just fine.
I don't know of any non-American pickup trucks that have the muscle needed for tough towing like you describe. Definitely do NOT go too light on pickup size especially considering your terrain, or it would be a dangerous thing.
Oh and make sure you get your truck and trailer outfitted with electric brakes and controller. And a gooseneck trailer is much safer as well.

I think they set up in the horse area when u set up for camping? I see a lot that advertise cowboy showers I have no clue what they are... Can some one post a link or pic of a few. I am in process of buying a horse trailer and see a lot advertised with this.
A "cowboy shower" is set up in the horse compartment. You can easily rig up one of your own...I just bought a "solar shower" which is really a sturdy bag with a hose and shower head on the end. Anyway, a 5 gallon bucket, filled with water and sat up on the roof of the trailer will also create a warm shower. Drill a hole in the side at the bottom, a little caulk and some plumbing hardware and a length of hose makes a nice, utility shower on the cheap.
Works in BP's as well as GN.
PS...if you're primitive camping where there is no running water, start with a clean trailer floor when you leave the barn, when you get to camp, push out any "oh I'm in the trailer time to poop" piles, and then keep some CLEAN rubber bath mats and shower shoes in your LQ to put down on the floor. A little rinsing and it's not so bad as living with smelly saddle butt for a long weekend.

I have a person interested in paying me to use my horse trailer to haul their own horse to another state. I want to get a signed contract drafted to protect myself and them. How can I get such a contract drawn up?
DO NOT RENT YOUR TRAILER UNLESS YOU PERSONALLY KNOW THESE PEOPLE.
The last think you want to do is let them rent it...and a week later hear nothing from them. You would have given them a week to sell your trailer to someone else...and nobody would have been looking for it.
You can pull up trailer rental contracts on the Internet. Have it notarized!

When you are carrying your horse in a trailer, should you lcarry the horse without the saddle and bridle? Would it harm your horse if you did?
Just asking for something to go wrong there. Don't do it.
