I'm looking to buy a truck/suv that i can pull a 2 horse, horse trailer. I would like to get good gas milage though, which i know is going to be pretty hard to find?
Any segestions would help; thanks!

Diesel!!!!!! Mine gets a average of 25 miles per gallon. On the highway I get about 28-29 miles per gallon. We also have a v6 dodge Dakota & it gets 18 miles per gallon. I have a Dodge 1 ton cummings diesel & they are great with the gas milage!! I was the one that posted you need a min of 114 inches wheel base!!!! SUV are not made to tow horses trailers!!!! Go with a truck. A 3/4 ton diesel to 1 ton. The diesel is a little more pricey, but well worth it!!

My cousin is selling one of her filly to theses people who are moving to TN (we live in TX), this filly has got in are trailer plenty of times without any problems (are trailer is a cattle trailer) But the people who are buying her gave us there trailer to get her to go in it (its a horses box/closed in with a with a divider straight down the middle) she wont go in the trailer which were thinking that mabey she dosnt like it cause its closed in which she isnt familar to. we want her to be really good before they come to get her because sence there moving so far, they would have to take her out to let her walk around somewhere, then put her back up in the trailer.
The last time we tried to put her in that trailer she went CRAZY & hurt her self from running into the trailer doors, someone please help us get her in the trailer!
We have put the trailer out in the pasture with her, with the doors open, she has seen her 1/2 brother jump in there like nothing with out a lead rope or halter (he LOVES trailers & will get inside of any if he can), we've put her mom in one side but she still didnt want anything to do with it.

An old timer's trick around here is to park the trailer in the field and put her grain in it, the first time, at the back of the trailer where she only has to put her head in to eat. Ideally, you gradually move the feed further into the trailer over a period of time.

As with any training, doing it gradually and consistantly over a period of time is best...

I also don't recommend leaving the trailer unattended for long periods of time in the fields. "Worse case scenario" keeps popping in my head, it's like I think of awful things that can happen. It's a pain in the butt, but I'd move the trailer in and out unless I was going to be around to keep an eye on things.

alright so im looking at some horse trailers to buy. how do you get rid of rust? If i were to re-paint one what would be the procedures?

surface rust? use naval jelly. it's available at an auto parts store. it kills rust. then you sand it down, prime and paint it. simple.
if you want it to look really nice though, consider having an auto body shop do the painting.

It is a used trailer and I'm not sure what t ypes of quesitons to ask to make sure it is safe?!

The most important thing is the floor, is it new? Think of your horse with a leg going through the bottom...
If they did not have proof of a new floor, I would replace it before I put one of my horses in it. They can look good from the top but, not be safe.Check the price for the floor before you buy.
Also need a rubber mat. And a title that matches the trailer.
Everything else is visible.
good luck

Okay, I ride horses so i need a vehicle that will haul a horse trailer.
I know trucks do and i have always wanted one, but i really like the Mazda CX7's.
They are nice and 'girly' which i want.
But can they haul a horse trailer??

Please, I really need to know, my 16th bday is coming up and my dad is making me make my decision quick.
kthnx.

:)

You can tow up to 2,000 pounds.

Does aluminum or steel hold up better? We found a steel for 1/2 the price of aluminum, obviously its heavier but any other downsides? rust faster ect?

also, does anybody know, in PA do you pay sales tax on trailers? and do dealers normally give you license plates to get the trailer home with? we live 3 hours away from the dealer so thats why i want all details :) would stink if i messed up!!

I bought a steel trailer. It was much heavier than the aluminum, as you said. But really, they are equivalents. As long as you have enough power to haul the trailer, you can use steel. We never had a rust problem with ours.

In PA you do pay sales tax on horse trailers, stock trailers, etc. I forget about the plates, though. It's been a few years since we got our trailer. I would assume they would give you something to get the trailer home with though.

How much does a horse trailer weigh? I have a 2007 Ford Explorer V6 with a 4 liter engine with a towing package. It is said to tow about 7,300 pounds. I want to get a horse trailer this spring and wanted to know what a 2 horse, and a three horse slant trailer would weigh so I know how much I can tow. Of course I know that you have to include the weight of the horse as well.

Thnk u!!
I wasn't asking if my vehicle was capible of towing it. That is my own business. I just wanted an answer to the question I posted. Thanks for not doing that.

Now...can anyone answer my question...PLZ!! Thnx

My 2 horse, straight load with a dressing room Featherlite (all aluminum) trailer is 2500 lbs empty. There is usually a plate on the trailer that says, especially since you pay your tag fees by weight. I add 1000 lbs per horse, and insist that the tow vehicle be rated for at least 5K. My 04 Expedition pulls with one horse well, but I notice a lot of sway with two horses.
