i want to go camping with my horse sometime this summer, just me and my horse. i'm not so sure where we're going, but we're doing it LOL. his past owner said my horse has been camping before, and he had a HUGE trailer with living quarters so i'm inclined to believe him...but he made up a lot of bull shit so i'm not entirely sure. as long as there's food in front of my horse he's entirely fine with standing tied...doesn't pull, etc. if he stands tied in the barn long enough he'll paw, but that's the extent of it. but i don't know how he'd be alone, by himself, all night. he knows how to untie himself, but he rarely does it. how would i test how well he'd do, short of tying him to a tree and staring at him all day LOL?

Set up a picket line between two objects - trees, trailers, whatever. Anything will work as long as it's above his head.

Then put him there for varying periods of time over the next couple months. He'll get used to the idea. Use a ring and clips, not a knot. You really don't want to wake up in the morning to find he's headed home without you.

Personally, I like a pair of hobbles and a short rope attached to a stake driven in the ground. They learn to deal with that quickly and it also keeps them from fighting if they ever end up caught up in wire or a rope. They will just stand until you come and get them. Hobble training has saved my horses many injures over the years.
