The truck I'm buying does not have a tow package on it.
But it does have a bumper hitch.
(The difference is that the bumper hitch connects only to the bumper, and the tow package would connect to the much stronger frame (or something like that) of the truck).
The bumper hitch can pull a maximum of 10,000lbs.
I only plan on hauling one horse in either a two horse or three horse trailer.

Will I need a larger weight capacity than 10,000lbs?
Should I invest the money and get a tow package, or just stick with the bumper hitch?

(And no worries, the truck has PLENTY of power to haul frickin anything. I'm just concerned about the hitch).
Ok, I was planning on getting a tow package on it anyway. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't wasting my money. How much weight capacity do you think I'd need? It'll only be one horse, in a two or three horse trailer.
I don't have a trailer, so I'll be borrowing other people's trailers for a while. So what is a rough estimate of how much an empty three horse slant bumper pull would weigh?

You should get the tow package, to be extra sure your precious cargo will be safe when hauling.

I believe my steel triple wall, bumper pull, four horse trailer weighs around 5,000 pounds empty. So I'd guess a 3 horse single wall would be less than that.

Here's an example of a three horse trailer- it says on the ad to be about 3,600 lbs, so I would guess the trailers you would borrow would be somewhere around that.

I am looking to buy an suv that I will mostly use for running around town but will occasionally haul a two or three horse bumber pull with...... What is the best SUV for this?

Before you even consider buying an SUV find out how much the GVWR, (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating) is. or the manufacturers recommended capacity of the trailer including the weight of the trailer itself and any thing being hauled in it. Thats the best way to find the best SUV/TRUCK to haul your horse trailer. Every manufacturer publishes a vehicle tow guide that can be obtained at any dealership. See that information before you buy your SUV/Truck. I prefer you go to Chevy/GMC, Ford, and Dodge dealerships to compare all the maximum load weight they can carry from all the SUV/Trucks.
The SUV/Trucks I think can carry super heavy loads are those new powerful 2011 Chevy Silverado HD trucks that can haul over 20,000lb!!!

If you just want an SUV, go with a 05-08 Dodge Durango. It has max towing of 8850lb's. or a 05-10 Ford Expedition, and/or 07-10 Chevy Tahoe, choose wisely.

What's the weirdest vehicle you've seen haul a trailer?

Today at the show, the people in front of me were hauling with: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/4/42/Chevrolet_Van_(Camper).JPG (it looked pretty much identical to that, just lower down). Hauling a pretty large two horse trailer with tack room. Their van was like 4 inches from the ground, I didn't see how it was possible and I felt really bad for the horse.
well...this van was struggling to tow. could barely make turns, grunted and definitely needed its suspension checked.
The horse was not a happy camper either, she kept trying to turn around and was kicking out. It did not look like a smooth ride when they were leaving, that's why I felt bad for her.

Its not exactly weird but I thought it was awesome :D
One of the horse stables that comes to our shows has a trailer that is like attached kinda like a semi?
But its permanent.
It has purple flames on it too. Haha
And no it isnt a semi, it IS a horse trailer
A very big one!
Hahha :)
